Status quo objection

How to respond to “We already have a supplier”

What it usually means

The buyer is reasonably happy, or at least not unhappy enough to switch. Changing suppliers takes effort and carries risk, so the default is to stay.

The approach

Don't attack the current supplier. Ask what they like and what they'd improve. Most people have at least one frustration.

What to say

1Great, most of the companies we work with did too before they switched. What do you like most about them?
2If you could change one thing about how it works today, what would it be?
3When is the contract up for renewal? It's often worth comparing a couple of months before.

Adapt the words so they sound like you. Then say them out loud a few times before your next call.

What to avoid

  • Criticising the current supplier
  • Pitching features they already have
  • Giving up without asking what could be better
